The Department of Homeland Security announced a series of plans that would change how the government grants work visas and the rights those visas grant to foreign nationals.
The department published the proposals in the Federal Register, saying they would “modernize and improve the efficiency of the H-1B program, add benefits and flexibilities, and improve integrity measures.”
H-1B visas are directed toward foreign nationals with U.S.-based jobs as engineers, doctors, and journalists, among others. Such visas are often given to graduates of U.S. colleges and universities.
“DHS continues to develop and implement regulations that increase efficiency and improve processes for employers and workers navigating the immigration system,” said DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “The Biden-Harris Administration’s priority is to attract global talent, reduce undue burdens on employers, and prevent fraud and abuse in the immigration system.”
